Countdown to Thanksgiving

Welcome Back

How to host a stress-free holiday

10 days away and you're mastering Thanksgiving this year! This week I’m happy to share with you a few more simple tips to help this year’s Thanksgiving be as stress-free as possible. Over the last few weeks, I've been your personal guide for planning a thanksgiving with less stress, more efficiency. And I'm not done yet!

Today's Tips:
Self- care, the perfected "Day-before plan," and for Subscribers: Busy Day Protein Smoothie and Black Friday Discounts!

Making Time for Self-Care

When my daughters were small and I began hosting large family gatherings, dinner parties, and the like, one thing I learned very quickly was to carve out time for self-care. This means so much more than planning what to wear, but making time for the little things to have a calm, stress-free day.

This week is the perfect time to make appointments for your hair or nails.

You may want to consider:

  • What are you wearing? Your kids and spouse?
  • Are the clothes pressed? Do they need mending?
  • Do I have shoes and jewelry that will work?
  • Do items need to go to the dry cleaner?

Making a plan means everything falls into place seamlessly on the big day.

On my Thanksgiving day timeline, I even carve out time in the morning for a walk or a quick workout. I add in 45 minutes to do my hair, get dressed, and freshen up my make-up. One thing my incredible husband does for me is to bring me a “getting ready cocktail”.

I keep small splits of champagne in the bar just for this. A little glass of wine before everyone arrives just puts me in the mood for the evening. A cup of tea has the same effect on me, but hey, who doesn’t love a little cocktail?

Be sure you plan for a healthy breakfast so you're not running on an empty stomach, or just coffee. I love a green juice or a protein smoothie in the morning. See my recipe below for a smoothie that will fuel and fill you up.

The Perfected Day Before

The day before Thanksgiving, I set the table and lay out the serving platters and add a small card with the name of each dish, so that nothing is forgotten in the fridge. Setting up the buffet is so helpful for when guests arrive and want to help you get dinner served. The serving utensils are set in place as well.

I prep the bar by slicing limes and lemons and make a batch of simple syrup or go ahead and make my batch cocktails if needed. Wine that needs to be chilled goes in the fridge and I fill up 2 large zip lock bags with extra ice for the bar and tuck them in the garage freezer until guests arrive.

On Wednesday, I also prep any vegetables so on Thanksgiving day I can enjoy my family and friends as much as possible. My cranberry sauce is always made ahead, as is my cornbread dressing.

Go over your menu one last time, and check all your ingredients to make certain everything is in place. And don’t forget that turkey, he should be well thawed and resting in the fridge.

I set aside 2 hours to run last minute errands: pick up flowers, desserts from the local baker, grab my dry cleaning, etc. As far as the house, I dust everything, check the powder room to be certain it is fresh, tidy, and well stocked with tissues, soap and fresh flowers.

To recap the day before plan:

  1. Set the table
  2. Set and label serving dishes and utensils
  3. Prep the bar and chill the wine
  4. Check the menu
  5. Prep veggies and extras
  6. Turkey!
  7. Housekeeping and last minutes

Take a deep breath, grab a bit of fresh air and relax. Prepare to enjoy to your Thanksgiving knowing you have everything in place and flawlessly planned.

Have a wonderful holiday!
